Project Description
The Project has been awarded to Sime Darby Energy Solutions Sdn Bhd in 2021. The scopes involved EPCC of a Gas Turbine Cogeneration plant with a 10 years LTSA contract. Requiring 3.4 MW, this customer became the pioneer for a Kawasaki GPB50D gas turbine model in Southeast Asia to power its plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor. The gas turbine’s exhaust is connected to a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) with added supplementary firing to achieve 25 tph of steam output required for the plant operations.
In the early stage, the project faced some difficulties getting authority approvals for plant synchronization with the grid. This is due to high fault current contributed by the Cogen plant and the 22kV network obsoletion in Pasir Gudang area. With years of experience in cogeneration synchronization with the grid, SDES managed to provide the solutions with certain grid protection and modification of the plant electrical network from 22 kV to 11 kV.
In the end of 2022, the project was commissioned. With cogeneration solution, it is estimated utilities saving achieved by the customer is around RM 400,000 to RM 500,000 monthly compared to their previous plant configuration before cogeneration. This resulted in an estimated payback period of less than 5 years. Moreover, this customer has also enjoyed the tax incentives program under GITA. Furthermore, aligning with sustainability goals, the customer was able to reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 20% after the addition of cogeneration.
